How to Resize a Photo for Instagram Story (Without Cropping)

Stories are a tall 9:16 frame. Here are the exact dimensions and three ways to fit any photo into a Story without losing part of it.

Instagram Story dimensions

A Story is 1080 × 1920 pixels — a 9:16 vertical ratio. That's the same shape as a phone screen, so a correctly sized Story fills the display from edge to edge with no letterbox.

Why Stories crop your photo

Most photos aren't 9:16. A landscape shot is too wide; a square is too short. When you add either to a Story, Instagram fits it by cropping the overflow or dropping in bars. The result is a cut photo or awkward empty space.

Three ways to fit a photo into a Story

  • Resize to 9:16 with borders. Fit your photo into a 1080 × 1920 canvas and fill the gaps with a solid color or blur. The whole photo shows, framed, no cut.
  • Crop to 9:16 yourself. Trim the photo to exactly 1080 × 1920 before posting. You lose the overflow by choice, not by Instagram's default.
  • Use Instagram's built-in fit. The app can add bars automatically, but you can't control the background and quality drops.
